Why Electricians Shouldn't Run Your Data Cables.

It is a common mistake in commercial build-outs to have the electrical contractor pull the network cables. While electricians are experts at handling high-voltage power, data cabling is a completely different science.

Electricity flows regardless of how a wire is bent. Data, however, consists of delicate, high-frequency signals. If a Cat6 cable is pulled too hard, kinked around a corner, or zip-tied too tightly, the internal geometry is crushed. This causes "crosstalk" and invisible data packet loss that will permanently cripple your network speeds.

FT4 vs. FT6 (Plenum) Compliance

In Ontario, if a network cable is run through a drop ceiling or raised floor that is used for air circulation (a plenum space), the Ontario Building Code legally requires FT6 (Plenum-rated) cable. Standard FT4 (Riser) cables emit highly toxic smoke if burned. We audit every facility to ensure your cabling is 100% code-compliant and safe.

Cat6 vs. Cat6A vs. Fiber Optic

  • Cat6: The industry standard for workstations, VoIP, and CCTV. Supports Gigabit speeds up to 328 feet.
  • Cat6A: Features thicker shielding for 10-Gigabit speeds. Ideal for high-end Wi-Fi access points and future-proofing.
  • Fiber Optic: Uses light to transmit data. Immune to electrical interference and can span kilometers. We use Fiber to connect server rooms across large warehouses.

What you need to know before signing a cabling contract.

Always ask these three things:
1. "Are you using pure Solid Bare Copper or CCA?" (CCA stands for Copper-Clad Aluminum. It is a cheap, fragile knockoff cable that cannot properly support PoE (Power over Ethernet) for cameras and phones. Alphian uses 100% Solid Copper).
2. "Will you provide Fluke certification reports?" (Testing proves the cable handles the speed it promises).
3. "Do you provide a labeled floor plan?" (You need to know where drop #42 actually goes).
